Full Metal Jacket 1987 Movie Recap

I watched this movie because of anime called "Youjo Senki". A freaking awesome anime I must say with military genre. 

I read from reddit comments, there is a speech scene at "Youjo Senki" that reference to this movie. Almost from word to word is exactly the same.

Just like that this movie pique my interest and I decide to watch it. Usually I don't really like military movies, maybe because most military movies is slow paced and need fully concentration to understand the dialogue, the terms, the jokes. 

For you that haven't watch "Youjo Senki" or the English name is "Saga of Tanya the Evil", I suggest to watch it. 

It really awesome and awe-inspiring. 

The movie opens with this soothing song (the song name is : "Hello Vietnam" by Johnnie Wright) and scene of several key person in this movie has their hair been shaved.

I only recognize some character that in the movie will call as Animal, Joker, Cowboy, and Private Pyle. Then we taken to a boot camp, where a Senior Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, gives his speech to a new recruit.

The speech is like this :

"From now on,

you will speak only when spoken to...

... and the first and last words

out of your filthy sewers will be ""sir.""

Do you maggots understand that?

If you ladies leave my island,

if you survive recruit training...

... you will be a weapon.

You will be a minister of death

praying for war.

But until that day, you are pukes.

You are the lowest form of life on Earth.

You are not even human-fucking-beings.

You are nothing but unorganized,

grabasstic pieces of amphibian shit.

Because I am hard, you will not like me.

But the more you hate me,

the more you will learn.

I am hard but I am fair.

There is no racial bigotry here.

I do not look down on niggers,

kikes, wops or greasers.

Here, you are all equally worthless.

And my orders are to weed out

all non-hackers...

... who do not pack the gear

to serve in my beloved Corps."

The introduction of some key people like, Private Pyle, Joker, Cowboy, subtlely made by Sergeant Hartman screaming to their faces.Pyle, Joker, and Cowboy not actually their real name. All these names were given by Sergeant Hartman, Joker because he likes throw some joke, Cowboy because he's from Texas, and Pyle I don't know what this means. Private Pyle real name is Lawrence Leonard.

The training starts. In eight weeks they trained to become a hard and tough marines. From morning to late night,they do this physical training, disciplinary and every night they will pray with their rifle. For about ten minutes we got introduced how the life in a recruit marine camp. Its harsh. Private Pyle always making mistakes. He can't do anything right. He slow, failed in many physical training with obstacle and seems like a very lack attention type of guy. 

One day Sergeant Hartman punish Private Joker because he said he don't believe in Virgin Mary, by assigned him as a new Squad Leader and be a private teacher for Pyle. Private Joker taught Private Pyle how to tie his shoes, how to fold the blanket, how to pass the obstacle, with patiently. His patient make Private Pyle grows some respect to him and view him as a friend.

Still Private Pyle makes a mistake up to one point, Sergeant Hartman announce every time Private Pyle makes a mistake, he will not punish him, he will punish all the team except Private Pyle.

There goes, every time Private Pyle makes a mistakes, the other people that reap the punishment. This makes all the team hate Private Pyle and one midnight, they gang up, gag Private Pyle's mouth, using a soup wrapped in towel they take turns hit Private Pyle in the ribs. Even Private Joker do the same thing to him, Private Joker is hesitated in the beginning. After that event, Private Pyle, his mental change suddenly. His eyes looks dead, like no spirit at all. He close his self, no friends, and talk to his rifle. His training start showing results. Turns out he is pretty good marksman/sniper. And Sergeant Hartman also start growing some respect to him.

The training end and soon they will graduate. Private Pyle and Cowboy passed as Infantry, while Private Joker at this Military Journalism.

At their late night on the island, Private Joker on duty for fire watch. he heard a sound and found Private Pyle sit on the toilet with his rifle loaded with full metal jacket.

Private Pyle looks insane and psychotic. Private Joker try to calm him down. Sergeant Hartman and other Private woke up hearing some noise and gun clicked sound. 

Sergeant Hartman scold both Private Joker and Private Pyle which ended he got shot by Private Pyle. After shot sergeant Hartman, Private Pyle then shoot himself.

One part of the movies finished.

Then here comes the part two of the movies.

Centered Private Joker sitting in a cafe at Vietnam with his new friend Ruftterman. Ruftterman is a new guy who just get stationed to the Basic Military Journalism.Complained about his job that no adrenaline at all, he wants to be at field and pulling some trigger. Private Joker seems like in charge of this new guy Ruftterman. He did not approve him to go to the field, did not encourage either. 

In a Basic Military Journalism meeting, when the commander asked for some news story, Private Joker inform him that the Vietnamese have attack plan at Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) which this information was ignored by the commander. The commander does not believe that story. The commander and Private Joker don't like each other.

Because Private Joker wants to write something real and in my opinion I think Private Joker is pacifist and he wants to use his writing to tell that war is bad. 

While the commander who runs this Basic Military Journalism wants some story that has winning feels on it, even they need to exaggerating it. 

At night, irony happened, the Vietnamese really launch attack at Tet holiday, caused major hit to US in many places. 

Private Joker throw some jokes to the Commander sarcastically shove it in his face, because he did not believe this information before from Private Joker. 

Caused Private Joker and Rufterman to be sent to Phu Bai, a war zone, maybe in a front line. To make some documentation I think. 

At Phu Bai, Private Joker meet again with his old friend from island, Private Cowboy. Both of them very happy to be meet again with each other. 

When Cowboy introduce Joker to his other squad friends, one of the personnel named Animal provoke Joker, expressed that Joker just all talks and don't know anything about combat.

Two of them almost want to hit each other. 

Just like that Private Joker and Rufterman together with Cowboy's Squad, follow their mission, together for quiet a time. 

There is a scene where they succesfully doing a mission and the squad will give an interview that be recorded for journalism purposes. 

All of them give their opinion about the war. 

Then comes a mission, where in this mission Cowboy's Lieutenant got bombed by a booby trap, un-saveable and die. 

The command falls to Cowboy as a senior NCO, meaning he is in charge for the squad. He must take his squad to continue to patrol.

When patrolling, seems like they lost, making mistake in reading map maybe from the last checkpoint?? Anyway because they going to wrong way, they have to change direction.

Private Eightball leading first to see is there a way thru, while he's patrolling the area, a sniper from unknown location shot him at the leg.

The whole squad watching from behind wall immediately open fire. 

Assuming there is a big army forces hidden in front of them, Cowboy suggest to the HQ to send some tank for back up. But no luck with the tank, he then ordered to pull out

to minimize the casualties. Private Doc don't want to leave Private Eightball, ignore the pull out order and runs to save Private Eightball only to got shot by the sniper.

Saw that, Animal also ignoring order and charge to save Private Doc and Private Eightball. The enemy only one sniper. With his last breath, Private Doc point out the 

location of the sniper. Both Private Eightball, Private Doc died.

The enemy only one sniper, Cowboy hesitated but he move up the squad, join Animal to pursuit the enemy.

Private Joker and Rufterfman comes as well. The enemy is hiding inside top of building. 

When Cowboy want to report this to the Control via radio, the sniper got a clean shot view of him, and just like that Private Cowboy died.

After threw some smoke bomb, rest of the squad charge inside the building to find the enemy.

Every corner they will divide team to scouts the area. 

Animal with Rufterman as a team, and Private Joker moves alone.

Private Joker is the first one found the enemy, when he try to shot the enemy, he run outs of ammo, only made a clicked sound that made the enemy aware of his existence.

The enemy is a Vietnamese little girl. She quickly opens fire. Private Joker try to cover himself form a wall, his rifle drops to the land and he pull out a revolver?

Private Joker waiting for a chance to shoot but seems like no chance at all, the little girl just keep fire on him, and then the girl down , someone shoot her. It was Rufterman with his rifle.

After scout out whole area to make sure the enemy only one person, Rufterman shout out that they got the sniper.

Rest of the squad quickly join up with Private Joker and Rufterman. Rufterman happily brag his achievement.

The girl still not really die, still struggling, can not move, with little voice she praying in Vietnam language. 

The movie end with Private Joker shot the girl to put her out of from her misery.
